Today is World Water Day. Everyone is appreciative of water in our daily lives -- it's essential for drinking, cleaning and living, but when it ends up where it shouldn’t be, it will quickly turn into your worst nightmare.
How to Prevent Water Damage in Your Home
We can't control the rain but we can take steps to protect our property (home or business) from water damage doom. Here are key ways to keep your property safe:
Regularly Check for Leaks – A small drip can lead to huge problems over time. Make it a habit to check under sinks, around appliances and behind toilets for signs of leaks. The sooner you can catch a leak the less damage it will do.
Maintain Gutters & Downspouts – Clogged gutters cause water to overflow and can seep into your home’s foundation and into the walls. Make sure gutters are clear and directing water away from your home. Consider a gutter guard to keep debris out.
Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Is – If a pipe bursts you have to shut off the main water valve immediately to help prevent flooding and water damage. Not sure where that's located? Click here to view our owner, David King explain what to look for so you can shut your water off quickly.
Regularly Inspect Roof & Foundation – If you have a crack, missing shingles or weak spots, that can allow water to get in. Hidden leaks love to start mold growth and mold loves to have mold babies very quickly.
Sump Pumps & Waterproofing – If you've noticed water in your basement or crawl space a sump pump (with a backup battery) and proper waterproofing can help keep water out.
