How AI Can Help you Understand Your Homeowners Insurance

Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT, Copilot and Claude aren’t going to stop your water leak, fix your mold problem or remove the odors from your fire. They can, however, be very valuable when it comes to understanding your insurance policy and what may be covered when you have a claim.

Before uploading your policy into an AI program, be sure to redact personal information such as your policy number, home address, claim number, phone number, email address and any other identifying or financial information.

You can ask AI questions like these to form a basis for understanding where you may be headed:

  • What does my policy cover if a pipe bursts?
  • What does my policy cover if an appliance like a washing machine or dishwasher overflows?
  • Is water damage covered differently from a slow leak that has been occurring over time?
  • Am I covered for mold remediation?
  • Does my policy have a monetary limitation on how much it will pay for mold remediation?
  • Am I covered if sewage backs up into my home?
  • What coverage do I have if groundwater or flood damage is caused by a failed sump pump?
  • Do I need separate flood insurance?
  • What type of storm damage is covered?
  • What is my deductible and does it come out of my pocket or is it deducted from the insurance claim payment?

Policies normally list the problems they cover, such as fire, hail and theft, along with exclusions such as floods or earthquakes. The most common policy types cover your home and structure for many disasters, but may exclude major events like flooding.

AI can help explain the language in your policy, but it should not be relied on to make a final determination about whether a specific claim will be covered.

It’s best to talk to your insurance provider and ask specific questions about what your insurance policy will cover. That will help clear up any questions you may have.

First In Restoration cannot review or interpret your insurance policy for you. What we can do is document the damage and restoration work, submit our documentation to your adjuster and answer questions about what we observed, documented and completed during the project.

When you have water, fire or mold damage, call the team at First In Restoration and let one of our experienced team members help you through the restoration process.
