Don’t Risk Water Damage, Prepare For Georgia Rain
Georgia rain can be a serious threat to your property’s foundation, crawlspace air quality. At First In Restoration we know one thing is for sure: prevention is cheaper than repair. Here are some tips so you’re ready for the upcoming Georgia rain to help prevent water damage.
Check Your Gutters Like Your Home Depends on It
Leaves and pine needle debris will block water flow very quickly. When gutters overflow, the water is looking for any place to go. The could end up behind your walls and all the way into your basement. Make gutter cleaning a regular chore (or let the professionals clean them for you), and double-check that the downspouts are pushing water away from your home.
Your Landscaping Might Be The Culprit
Water needs to move away from your home. Mulch too high? Flower beds sloping the wrong way? Maybe your azaleas are too close causing water to pool up. You need to keep rainwater shifted away from your home and away from your foundation. Don’t know where to start? We always recommend calling a landscape company or architect that can help with preventative measures.
Smelly Basement or Crawlspace?
If your basement or crawlspace smell musty or feels damp, that means that water is already getting in to your home. Seal any cracks and have your crawlspace encapsulated. You should also consider installing a sump pump which will really help during the next downpour.
Pro Tip: If you see bubbling paint in your home, warping floors, or smell something kind of weird and earthy you may have water damage and hidden mold.

Preventing Water Damage: The Importance of Gutter Maintenance
Gutters are your first line of defense when it comes to water damage. For some reason, homeowners kind of put gutter maintenance off when really they should be top of mind. At First In Restoration, we’ve seen firsthand how clogged, damaged, or misaligned gutters can lead to major water damage headaches for homeowners. First In Restoration is Georgia’s #1 water damage restoration company and we want to help you prevent water damage before it even happens. The best way to stay ahead of water damage is with seasonal maintenance.
How Gutters Protect Your Home
Gutters are designed to collect rainwater from your home’s roof, but did you know that they also help with:
- Keeping water from seeping into your foundation and crawlspace
- Soil erosion around the perimeter of your home
- Preventing mold growth on your siding as well as roof edges
- Helps prevent basement flooding
Your Gutters Might Be Failing
Not sure if your gutters are due for some attention? Look for these indicators that water isn’t being properly channeled:
- Water gushing over the gutters during rainstorms
- A pool of water near the home’s foundation
- Gutters pulling away from the house (or if you notice they are sagging)
- If you see cracks, holes or rust
- Water stains on exterior siding or soffits (or if you start to see stains on your interior walls or ceiling)
Gutter Maintenance Tips for Every Homeowner
- Clean your gutters at least twice a year during spring and fall (or more often if you have a lot of trees in your hard)
- Install gutter guards which will reduce the amount of debris that builds up in your gutters.
- Check your gutter downspouts and make sure water is draining away from your home.
- Inspect after storms for clogs or visible damage.
- Trim overhanging trees to minimize leaves, pine straw and twigs that will fall into your gutters.

Springtime Surprises: Weird Places Water Damage Can Hide in Your Home
We are loving this beautiful spring weather in Georgia. Spring is a time for fresh air, blooming flowers… and finding surprise water damage?
Unfortunately water has a way of hiding in odd spots in your home.
Here are some areas you need to check this season for water damage to your home:
- Behind Your Walls – That small discoloration on your wall or ceiling might be hiding a major pipe leak.
- Under Appliances – This is a big one. We get a lot of calls regarding leaking appliance such as refrigerators (ice machine), dishwasher and washing machines. At least quarterly move them to inspect around the area and look for moisture (or mold).
- Inside Air Ducts – Moisture in your HVAC system can lead to mold growth. We often see this in unconditioned crawlspaces that are also improperly encapsulated.
- Around Windows – Spring rain loves to find its way under old window seals and caulk that’s old and has dry rot. This can be easily fixed with new windows, seals or new caulk.
- In the Attic – Winters in Georgia are bizarre. Freezing rain, sometimes hail, sometimes a tornado, occasionally snow! Your roof may have formed a leak during the winter storms which could be causing damage you haven’t noticed yet. Another thing to note– your attic is hot, if you have mechanical items in your attic (such as an HVAC unit or ducts) they can condensate inside on the inside and outside of the duct work causing mold to form.
We know that surprise water damage is a homeowner’s worst nightmare, but keeping your eye out and catching it early can save you a huge headache (and costly repairs). If you start to notice musty smells, warped flooring, or stainingit’s time to give First In Restoration a call.

Waterproofing vs. Water Mitigation: What’s the Difference?
Two terms often come up in the water damage world: waterproofing and water mitigation. While they may sound similar, they serve different purposes and are used in different situations. If you’re wondering which one you need this guide will break down the differences so you have a clear path forward.
What Is Water Mitigation?
The goal with water mitigation is to immediately respond and stop the water damage. This includes extracting standing water and drying out affected areas as quickly as possible.
When is water mitigation needed?
- After a pipe burst, a leaking roof or a storm-related flooding are a few examples
- When there’s standing water in your home or business
- To prevent mold growth after a leak or flood
What does water mitigation involve?
- Water extraction using pumps and vacuums
- Drying and dehumidification to remove excess moisture
- Removing damaged materials like drywall, flooring as well as insulation
- Disinfecting and sanitizing to prevent mold and bacteria growth
While it doesn’t prevent future water issues, water mitigation is about damage control and will ensures your property is safe and stable after a water disaster.
What Is Waterproofing?
The goal with waterproofing is to prevent water damage from occurring in your home or business. This preventative measure creates a barrier that will prevent leaks, moisture buildup and flooding.
When is waterproofing needed?
- If you have a basement that is prone to flooding or moisture issues
- When you live in an area that experiences heavy rainfall or high water tables
- If you’ve had repeated leaks or issues of water getting in at the same area
- During a build a basement or crawlspace build to prevent future water damage
What does waterproofing involve?
- Sealing cracks in the home’s foundation and walls
- Installing a sump pump in your basement or crawlspace that will remove water buildup
- Applying a waterproof coating and sealant
- Improving drainage systems around the exterior of the property (such as a French drain)
- Encapsulation: prevents water vapor from getting in to the crawlspace.
Waterproofing is a smart long-term investment for your property. It will help prevent water from entering your home or business.
Waterproofing vs. Water Mitigation: Which Do You Need?
- If you’re dealing with water damage right now, you need emergency water mitigation to stop the current water damage.
- If you want to prevent water damage from happening again in the future waterproofing will help.
- Sometimes, both are necessary—water mitigation to handle an existing issue and waterproofing to ensure it doesn’t happen to you again.

After the Storm: What Heavy Rain in Georgia Could Mean for Your Home
Georgia got hit hard with heavy rain the last two days, soaking everything from rooftops to crawlspaces. For most, it was just another wet spring weekend—but for some homeowners, it was a warning sign. Now is the time to check for water damage, leaks and crawlspace flooding in your Georgia Home
At First In Restoration, we’ve already started getting calls from residents in Gwinnett, Walton, Barrow and Hall counties about suspicious water spots, damp smells and water pooling up. Even if you didn’t notice any major flooding, it’s time to be proactive. Waiting too long to inspect your home could lead to long-term damage, mold growth or even foundation issues.
What to Look For After a Major Rainfall
Even if your home seems okay to the naked eye, water has a sneaky way of finding spots to get into. Here are some things you should check today:
- Ceilings & Walls: Stains or paint bubbling up could mean a roof leak.
- Flooring: Warping, discoloration, or soft spots in hardwood, carpet or vinyl flooring are indicators that there is moisture underneath.
- Basement & Crawlspace: These areas are the first to flood. It’s always good to check them out after a hard rain.
- HVAC System: A wet furnace or exposed ductwork in a crawlspace can easily become moldy and affect your air quality.
- Smell Test: Sometimes you will smell something musty before you actually see mold. Don’t ignore it.
Why the Crawlspace Is the Silent Victim
You don’t really think about your crawlspace regularly. They’re easy to forget until there’s a problem. If you find standing water or excess moisture in your crawlspace after a heavy rain, it’s a huge red flag. It can lead to wood rot, mold, pest infestations and even compromised insulation. If your crawlspace smells earthy or feels damp, you have problem and need to call First In Restoration.
What Makes This Rainfall Different
Spring storms are common, but this weekend’s back-to-back days of rain saturated the ground faster than it could soak in. That increases hydrostatic pressure around your foundation, which can push water through small cracks finding its way into your home. If you have a poorly graded yard or clogged gutters that could worsen your water issue.
What to Do Right Now
It’s best not to wait for visible damage. A quick inspection could save you thousands down the road.
- Walk the perimeter of your home and look for standing water or erosion
- Give a good look inside near windows and around baseboards
- Check out your crawlspace or basement with a flashlight
- Snap photos of anything suspicious in case you need it for insurance documentation
Call First In Restoration if you see or smell something suspicious. We offer fast, honest inspections and emergency mitigation services to keep your home safe and dry.

Why Does Water Damage Always Seem to Happen at the Worst Time?
Have you ever noticed that water damage never happens when it’s convenient (if there’s actually a time that it’s convenient)? It’s almost like your plumbing waits for the absolutely worst possible moment to fail.
Water damage loves to strike:
- Right Before Vacation – You’re all packed, you’re excited and ready to leave, when you’re heading to the beach and then… your water heater leaks all over the laundry room.
- In the Middle of the Night – There’s nothing like waking up at 3:30 AM to the sound of rushing water from a pipe burst.
- During a Holiday – Your kitchen sink decides to overflow right before serving Christmas lunch to your extended family.
- On a Weekend – Because, of course, plumbers are so much easier to reach when your supply line bursts on a Saturday night.
- When You’re Already Stressed – Big work deadline? Kids’ baseball tournament? That’s when your ceiling decides to start dripping.
Water damage doesn’t care about your schedule but we do! At First In Restoration, we’re available 24/7, so no matter when disaster strikes, we’ll be there FAST.

Do I Need a New Roof? What Water Spots on Your Ceiling Could Mean
If you notice off color water spots on your ceiling, that’s never a good sign. Now it doesn’t always mean you need a full blown roof replacement, however, it can mean you have a moisture issue. If you see water spots it’s time to act now. If you ignore the signs it could lead to structural damage of your home, mold and fungus growth and very costly repairs.
What Causes Water Spots on the Ceiling?
Water stains often result from:
- Roof leaks – Missing or damaged shingles allow water to seep in.
- Clogged gutters – Water backs up and leaks under roofing materials.
- Attic condensation – Poor ventilation can cause moisture buildup.
- Plumbing leaks – A leaking pipe above the ceiling could also be the culprit.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Roof?
If the leak is small and isolated, a roof patch or repair may be enough to get you by without having to replace your roof. However, if your roof is older, has multiple leaks (what’s it doing during a rain storm?) or widespread damage, it might be time for a full replacement. A professional inspection can determine the best course of action.
Act Fast to Prevent Water Damage
Even a tiny leak can cause major issues over time. If you see water stains on your ceiling don’t wait! At First In Restoration, we specialize in water damage mitigation and restoration. Whether your leak is from the roof, plumbing or another source, we can identify the issue, dry your home in and prevent further damage.

Spring Cleaning Reminder: Don’t Overlook Hidden Water Damage
Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home, a fresh coat of paint, cleaning the deck furniture, clear out all that clutter and tackle deep cleaning projects. But while you’re dusting book shelves and scrubbing the kitchen floor, don’t forget to check for hidden water damage that could be hiding in places you don’t normally think to look at. If you can catch small issues now, it can prevent very costly water damage repairs later.
Where to Check for Hidden Water Damage
Water damage isn’t always obvious. Slow leaks and moisture buildup can go unnoticed for months (sometimes years!), which will lead to mold growth and home structural issues. As you go through your spring cleaning checklist make sure you check the following:
- Under sinks and around appliances – Look for leaks, water stains and even water spots and warping on cabinets as well as flooring.
- Ceilings and walls – Discoloration, bubbling paint and sagging drywall can all be signs of hidden moisture.
- Closets, basements and crawlspaces – Musty odors and visible mold growth often indicate moisture.
- Windows and doors – Check for condensation or water, which could mean poor (or old) sealing, caulking or leaks.
- Sump pump – Test it (we recommend) quarterly to make sure it’s functioning properly before heavy spring rains hit.
Why Early Detection Matters
Ignoring small leaks or moisture problems can lead to expensive damage. Over time, water can weaken wood, cause mold and fungus infestations and it can even compromise your home’s foundation. If you notice any signs of water damage, address it early and it can save you thousands in repairs.

My Home Has Water Damage: Do I Have to Replace My Cabinets?
So your kitchen or bathroom cabinets have been exposed to water damage. Now you’re wondering: How much is this going to cost? Do I have to replace these cabinets? Can they be salvaged? We can answer your questions.
Assessing Water-Damaged Cabinets
Not all cabinets are affected by water damage the same. The following factors help determine whether they can be restored or if they must be replaced:
1. Material Type
- Solid wood cabinets: This is your best bet in being able to rescue your cabinets. If the water is dried quickly (and properly) then there is a good chance the cabinets will not need to be pulled out. However, if you leave the water damage and don’t handle it right away then the cabinets will drink up that moisture and it will cause warping and splitting.
- Plywood cabinets: These are more water-resistant than particleboard made cabinets. They may be salvageable but would have to immediately be dried out.
- MDF (medium-density fiberboard) or “particleboard” cabinets: This type of material will absorb water like Sponge Bob. These materials will swell, puff up, weaken and fall apart once soaked. If your cabinets are made of MDF you most likely will need to have them replaced.
2. Duration of Water Exposure
The longer your cabinets remain exposed to water and moisture, the worse the damage will be. Cabinets that were quickly dried within 24-48 hours stand a much better chance of being salvaged. However, the longer your cabinets are exposed to water the more issues you will have with damage and mold growth which will lead to a cabinet replacement.
3. Mold and Fungus Growth
Mold loves damp, dark areas—like the insides of water-damaged cabinets. If mold has started to grow, you will need to replace your cabinets, especially if the fungus spores have spread into the wood.
4. Structural Integrity
Check for signs of weakness, such as:
- Warping or swelling
- Soft or crumbling wood
- Separation at the seams
- Doors and drawers that no longer close
If your cabinets are buckling, soft to the touch or falling apart, they likely need to be replaced.
Can Water-Damaged Cabinets Be Saved?
If your cabinets are made of solid wood or plywood and were not sitting in water for an extended period, they may be salvageable. Here’s what to do:
- Call First In Restoration so professionals can properly dry your space out.
- Act Quickly – Remove standing water and dry your cabinets within 24 hours using fans and dehumidifiers.
- Inspect for Damage – Look for warping, wetness, softness and mold
- Disinfect Thoroughly – Use a mold-resistant cleaner to prevent fungal growth.
However, if structural integrity is compromised, replacement is the best option.
When to Replace Water-Damaged Cabinets
You’ll likely need to replace your water-damaged cabinets if:
- They are made of particleboard and have become swollen or started to crumble.
- Mold has developed inside or underneath the cabinets.
- The structure is soft, warped or separating at the seams.
- The cabinet doors and drawers no longer function properly.
- You had a Category 3 flood. It is likely you will have to replace your cabinets regardless if it comes into contact with “Black Water”. There are times we could salvage the cabinets, but it is rare.
- If there is actual mold growth on the cabinets then it has to be removed and properly contained.
Trust First In Restoration for Water Damage
At First In Restoration, we specialize in water damage restoration. If your home has flooded, don’t wait—mold and structural damage can worsen quickly. Our team will assess your cabinets and determine the best course of action, whether it’s salvaging them or installing brand-new cabinetry.

Myth or Fact? “Water Damage Dries Out on Its Own”
Have you ever spilled something in your home and thought, “It’ll just dry out on its own”? Well, that might be true for a minor spill like if you knock over a cup of water, but serious water damage doesn’t just go away—and if you believe otherwise, it can lead to costly repairs and health hazards.
Why Water Damage Won’t Just Go Away
Water acts fast. When water seeps into floors and walls it doesn’t just evaporate. Instead, it gets absorbed into porous and organic materials like drywall, insulation and wood. You always have to properly dry and dehumidify your space, otherwise that trapped moisture creates the perfect breeding ground for mold, structural damage hazardous air quality issues. If you are a senior citizen this is especially important because it can quickly cause health problems.
The Hidden Dangers of Untreated Water Damage
- Mold Growth – Mold begins to grow very quickly. It can begin in as little as 24-48 hours in moist conditions. After it spreads, it will trigger allergies and respiratory issues. Mold remediation is costly so don’t wait for it to turn into mold.
- Structural Weakness – Water weakens wood framing, it will warp floors and it turns drywall to mush. Over time this will cause rot as well as dangerous conditions for your home’s framing structure.
- Electrical Hazards – If water reaches electrical wiring, outlets or appliances, it can increase the risk of short circuits, power failure and it can even cause a fire.
How to Handle Water Damage the Right Way
Instead of waiting for any moisture to “dry out on its own,” you need to take action and immediately call First In Restoration for professional water extraction and drying. At First In Restoration, we use advanced equipment to fully remove moisture, prevent mold growth and we will restore your property to its pre-damaged condition.
Don’t wait for a small leak to turn into a big problem! If you’re dealing with water damage, call First In Restoration at 470-748-0225 or visit www.firstinrestoration.com for 24/7 emergency service.
