Top Signs You Need an Emergency Plumber Right Away

Plumbing emergencies can strike any day at any time, and when they do, you must act very quickly to prevent extensive and costly damage. Knowing the warning signs can help prepare you so you can avoid major issues like water damage, flooding and mold growth.

Here are some of the top signs that you need to immediately call First In Restoration (470.748.0225) for our 24/7 on-call licensed emergency plumber.

1. Burst Pipes

A burst pipe can cause massive water damage in a matter of minutes. Whether it’s due to freezing temperatures, corrosion of an old pipe, or high water pressure, a ruptured pipe requires immediate professional attention. First In Restoration will stop the flooding in your home, repair the issue and restore your water.

2. No Water Supply

If you turn on your faucet and nothing comes out, then it could be due to a major plumbing issue, such as a broken water main, a hidden leak or an issue with your water supplier. First In Restoration’s licensed emergency plumber can quickly diagnose the issue and resolve the problem to return water to your home or business.

3. Overflowing Toilet

Most of us have had an embarrassing episode with an overflowing toilet. However, toilet overflow is more than a minor inconvenience—it can quickly lead to severe water damage and potential health hazards due to sewage exposure in Category 3 water. Immediately shut the water off on your toilet and start plunging. If plunging doesn’t fix the issue, and the water keeps pouring out, it’s time to call First In Restoration’s. We will send our emergency plumber and help prevent further damage to your home.

4. Sewage Backup

Don’t wait until sewage from your main drain starts backing in to your kitchen sink or laundry drain – things will get ugly fast from there. Watch out for these lead up signs before disaster strikes: If you notice a foul smell coming from your drains or if your sinks are slow to drain then it’s time to call a plumber for an inspection. If left and ignored then visible sewage including feces may back in to your sinks or bathtubs which is a clear signs of a sewage backup. This can pose serious health risks and needs immediate professional intervention.

5. Water Heater Failure

If your water heater stops working, or if you notice it’s leaking, or making strange noises, then you could be dealing with a major malfunction. Whether it’s a broken thermostat, sediment buildup, or a potential gas leak, our emergency plumber can diagnose the issue and fix your problem quickly. Don’t wait for major damage to set in to call.

6. Flooding or Major Leaks

Stepped into a puddle in the kitchen? Not sure if it’s a stray ice cube or something serious? Any unexpected pooling of water in your home—whether from an old pipe, faulty appliance, or leaky roof—should be addressed immediately. Standing water can cause structural damage and mold growth if not dealt with in a timely manner. Avoid serious water damage and call First In Restoration now: 470.748.0225.

7. Frozen Pipes

During the winter months if temperatures drop below freezing, especially for multiple days you may experience frozen pipes which can lead to pipe bursts and significant damage. If you notice a lack of (or no) water flow, visible frost and icicles on pipes, or bulging pipes, call us so we can send our emergency plumber before your pipes burst. If you hear a loud rushing sound or see water gushing from the inside or outside of your home or business, you need to call First In Restoration immediately for water extraction and mitigation cleanup.

8. Unusual Water Pressure Drops

If you are washing your hands or taking a shower and notice an abrupt and severe drop in water pressure then you should be alarmed, as this can indicate a serious leak, a blocked pipe, or even a serious issue with your water main. First In Restoration’s emergency plumber can pinpoint the cause of your water issue and restore your water pressure.

9. Gurgling Sounds from Drains

Drains and toilets shouldn’t make gurgling noises, if yours do then it may indicate a blockage or a problem with your sewer line. Do not ignore these signs because they can lead to sewage backups and costly repairs.

10. Persistent or Uncontrollable Leaks

A small leak may not seem like a big deal, or time sensitive, but if the leak worsens or can’t be controlled with temporary fixes, it can lead to disastrous and extensive water damage. First In Restoration’s emergency plumber can address the issue before it escalates. No matter the size of the leak, we can help.

Handling Water Damage During a Holiday Gathering

Easter Sunday is a holiday that should be about family, delicious food, traditions and making memories, not a surprise waterfall from your ceiling from water damage.

When everyone’s in town and you’re hosting a big family get-together, your home’s plumbing is working extra hard. The strain from additional people using the bathroom or running multiple loads of dishes through out the weekend can stress out your home’s plumbing system. Everything seems fine at first — Then a guest’s toilet overflows. Maybe your dishwasher leaks mid-cycle. Even worse — your hot water heater decides that after all of these years of faithful service, it’s time to give out, resulting in a flooded garage, attic, or basement while you’re just trying to carve the ham and serve some casseroles. .

Why Holiday Water Damage Happens

When your house is full, your plumbing doesn’t get a break. Common holiday mishaps or heavy use include:

  • Clogged toilets or drains
  • Appliance leaks from old dishwashers or washing machines
  • Hidden pipe bursts
  • Water heaters throwing in the towel

What to Do If Water Damage Strikes During Easter

  1. Stay calm. Shut off the water supply to your house. (Click HERE for a video on how to do this).
  2. Protect valuables. Move electronics, heirlooms, and an important items away from the affected area if possible.
  3. Document all of the damage. Take photos and video to submit to your insurance company (do this even if you decide not to file a claim).
  4. Call First In Restoration immediately. The longer the water sits, the more damage it causes to your home and it’s structure, and mold can begin to spread within 24-48 hours of water exposure.

We’re Available — Even on Easter

At First In Restoration, we know emergencies don’t take holidays off. That’s why we don’t either. First In Restoration’s emergency response team is on call 24/7 for your water damage emergency.

How to Prevent Basement Water Damage Before the Next Big Storm

Earlier this week, Georgia got hit with a ton of heavy rain. The pollen count was super high and we needed the rain! However, with rain there comes moisture issues you may not have noticed until now. After the storm if you noticed puddles forming around the foundation or any water getting into your basement, it’s time to call in the professionals at First In Restoration. Didn’t experience any rude water getting in? That’s great news! Next time you may not be as lucky so but with a few proactive steps, you can protect your home from water damage before the next big storm rolls in.

1. Keep Gutters and Downspouts Clear

Clogged gutters are a big culprit behind home flooding. Make sure your gutters are clean and the downspouts are directing water at least five feet away from your home’s foundation. Some additional ways to keep the water flowing — 1) add downspout extensions to prevent water from pooling too close to your home, 2) add gutter guards that keep debris out of your gutters.

2. Check and Seal Foundation Cracks

Even a small crack in your foundation can let water into your basement. You need to routinely inspect for gaps and seal them with waterproof caulk or hydraulic cement to keep moisture out. We recommend having a trained professional come out to take a look and make repairs.

3. Install a Sump Pump to Prevent Basement Water Damage

Your sump pump prevents your basement from flooding. If you don’t have one, install a sump pump. If you already have one, test it regularly to make sure it works (You don’t want to wait until it’s raining to find out it’s broken). A battery backup is a smart investment to keep it running during power outages (which we get a lot of during spring storms).

4. Ensure Proper Yard Drainage

Landscaping isn’t just to beautify your yard. Your lawn service can also properly slope your yard so it’s sloping away from your home. This will prevent rainwater from pooling up near your foundation. If you notice standing water then have your landscaper regrade or even install a French drain which can help redirect it.

5. Window Wells Covers

Rainwater loves to push its way into basement windows. Consider installing clear, durable window well covers that will keep water out but still allows natural light into your basement.

6. Maintain Your Plumbing

Leaky pipes or an old water heater can contribute to excess moisture. Regular plumbing maintenance helps prevent minor problems from turning into major water damage issues.

7. Install a Sewer Backup Valve

If you live in an area prone to sewer backups, a backup valve can prevent category three wastewater from flowing into your basement during heavy storms.

8. Use Rain Gardens to Manage Runoff

A rain garden is a beautiful, smart and eco-friendly way to absorb excess rainwater. When you strategically place one in your yard, it can help reduce water runoff and it will ease pressure on your drainage system. Learn more about rain gardens HERE.

My Home Has Water Damage: Do I Have to Replace My Cabinets?

So your kitchen or bathroom cabinets have been exposed to water damage. Now you’re wondering: How much is this going to cost? Do I have to replace these cabinets? Can they be salvaged? We can answer your questions.

Assessing Water-Damaged Cabinets

Not all cabinets are affected by water damage the same. The following factors help determine whether they can be restored or if they must be replaced:

1. Material Type

  • Solid wood cabinets: This is your best bet in being able to rescue your cabinets. If the water is dried quickly (and properly) then there is a good chance the cabinets will not need to be pulled out. However, if you leave the water damage and don’t handle it right away then the cabinets will drink up that moisture and it will cause warping and splitting.
  • Plywood cabinets: These are more water-resistant than particleboard made cabinets. They may be salvageable but would have to immediately be dried out.
  • MDF (medium-density fiberboard) or “particleboard” cabinets: This type of material will absorb water like Sponge Bob. These materials will swell, puff up, weaken and fall apart once soaked. If your cabinets are made of MDF you most likely will need to have them replaced.

2. Duration of Water Exposure

The longer your cabinets remain exposed to water and moisture, the worse the damage will be. Cabinets that were quickly dried within 24-48 hours stand a much better chance of being salvaged. However, the longer your cabinets are exposed to water the more issues you will have with damage and mold growth which will lead to a cabinet replacement.

3. Mold and Fungus Growth

Mold loves damp, dark areas—like the insides of water-damaged cabinets. If mold has started to grow, you will need to replace your cabinets, especially if the fungus spores have spread into the wood.

4. Structural Integrity

Check for signs of weakness, such as:

  • Warping or swelling
  • Soft or crumbling wood
  • Separation at the seams
  • Doors and drawers that no longer close

If your cabinets are buckling, soft to the touch or falling apart, they likely need to be replaced.

Can Water-Damaged Cabinets Be Saved?

If your cabinets are made of solid wood or plywood and were not sitting in water for an extended period, they may be salvageable. Here’s what to do:

  • Call First In Restoration so professionals can properly dry your space out.
  • Act Quickly – Remove standing water and dry your cabinets within 24 hours using fans and dehumidifiers.
  • Inspect for Damage – Look for warping, wetness, softness and mold
  • Disinfect Thoroughly – Use a mold-resistant cleaner to prevent fungal growth.

However, if structural integrity is compromised, replacement is the best option.

When to Replace Water-Damaged Cabinets

You’ll likely need to replace your water-damaged cabinets if:

  • They are made of particleboard and have become swollen or started to crumble.
  • Mold has developed inside or underneath the cabinets.
  • The structure is soft, warped or separating at the seams.
  • The cabinet doors and drawers no longer function properly.
  • You had a Category 3 flood. It is likely you will have to replace your cabinets regardless if it comes into contact with “Black Water”. There are times we could salvage the cabinets, but it is rare.
  • If there is actual mold growth on the cabinets then it has to be removed and properly contained.

Trust First In Restoration for Water Damage

At First In Restoration, we specialize in water damage restoration. If your home has flooded, don’t wait—mold and structural damage can worsen quickly. Our team will assess your cabinets and determine the best course of action, whether it’s salvaging them or installing brand-new cabinetry.

How Does a Sewage Backup Happen?

Sewage backups are gross, smell terrible and are super messy! But have you ever wondered how they happen

What Is a Sewage Backup?

A sewage backup happens when dirty water that should go down your drains (ie: flushing toilet water) but instead comes right back up into your sinks (including the one in the kitchen), toilets or bathtubs. We have even seen sewage come up the drain pipe of a washing machine. Yuck!

Why Do Backups Happen?

Here are some of the most common reasons for sewage backup:

1. Clogged Pipes

The number one culprit is from flushing things that don’t belong in the toilet. This ranges from wipes (we know a lot of them say you can flush them. DON’T DO THAT!), paper towels, feminine products, crayons or toys. All items that should not be flushed (unless you just want a large plumbing bill that could be prevented). When the pipes get too full the water has to go somewhere, so it comes back up! This is a great reason to make sure you stay and watch the toilet completely flush before leaving the bathroom.

2. Tree Roots in the Pipes

Those darned ole tree roots just love to find any tiny little crack in the underground pipes. They take over the pipes and grow inside which causes blockages. As you can imagine, this is very invasive and will cause water as well as waste to back up into your home.

3. Heavy Rain & Flooding

When there is heavy rain, often time the city’s sewer system can get too full too quickly. If their system can’t handle all the water, unfortunately sewage can flow back into your home. We’ve seen this a lot in older homes.

4. Broken or Old Pipes

Pipes are like people. Over time we all just get a little worn out. The pipe in your home can crack or collapse the older it gets. If a pipe is broken the water with waste can clog up and won’t flow out like it should. This can definitely cause a sewage backup.

5. Blocked Sewer Line

Unfortunately folks will wash grease down their sink or flush a lot of stuff they shouldn’t. Collectively this can clog your main sewer line in your neighborhood. If there is a blocked sewer line this will affect many houses in the neighborhood and send dirty wastewater back into homes (yes, not even just YOUR wastewater, Bill’s next door will come up into your house as well).

How to Prevent a Sewage Backup

  • Only flush toilet paper—Remember: no wipes, paper towels or trash!
  • Don’t pour grease down the sink— Your mother told you not to when you were growing up, so why start now? It will harden and clog your pipes.
  • Schedule a licensed plumber to check your pipes every few years. Maintenance is key!
  • Install a backwater valve—all the cool kids have one. This will stop sewage from flowing the wrong way (code for: inside your house)!

Spring Is Here! Is Your Home Ready? How To Avoid Water Damage.

The first day of spring means so much more than warm weather and beautiful flowers—it’s also a time for you to prepare your property for the seasonal changes. With increased rainfall and shifting temperatures (and boy does it shift a lot in Georgia!), spring can be a prime season for water damage. That mean you need to be prepared.

What Do You Mean Spring Can Cause Water Damage? How Do I Avoid It?

Winter puts wear and tear on your home. Spring brings a lot of rain which can expose roof leaks. Also, you may have experienced a frozen pipe without you realizing it (until you turn your water back on to water your petunias). Early spring is the perfect time to inspect your home and address any water-related risks before they turn into expensive issues.

  • One of the most common problems is clogged gutters. Over the fall and winter, leaves and debris build up if you don’t maintain your gutters. This prevents proper drainage. When the southern spring showers hit all of that excess water has nowhere to go so it will lead to roof leaks, basement flooding or even cracks in your foundation
  • Another common springtime headache is water damage from plumbing problems. Georgia had a deep freeze in January. Freezing temperatures may have weakened your pipes which makes them way more vulnerable to leaks or pipe bursts. It’s always a good idea to have a professional inspect your exposed pipes. As a homeowner you, yourself can check for signs of water damage around appliances and keep an eye out for any slow leaks. This will help catch any issues before they turn major. You never want your water damage to linger because it will lead to mold growth or structural issues.
  • Let’s not forget about the sump pump—the unsung hero of many Georgia basements and crawlspaces. If your sump pump isn’t working properly, these heavy Georgia spring rains could quickly turn your basement in to a Olympic-size swimming pool. Test your sump pump now to make sure that when the next Georgia storm rolls in, your home stays nice and dry.

Remember, as the seasons change in Georgia, a little bit of home maintenance can go a very long way in preventing water damage. But if you end up find yourself dealing with leaks, flooding or even mold, First In Restoration is here to help. First In Restoration specializes in water mitigation, mold removal and emergency water damage restoration services.

Welcome spring with a dry and damage-free home! But if water damage strikes, call First In Restoration at 470-748-0225 or visit www.firstinrestoration.com for expert restoration services.

Emergency Sewage Cleanup in Pebble Point, Loganville

Water damage is very stressful for any homeowner and it’s even worse when it keeps happening. That’s exactly what one of our recent customers has experienced recently in the Pebble Point subdivision of Loganville, Georgia. Before we knew them, in 2022, they unfortunately had two water damage claims due to plumbing issues — one in their master bathroom and then a frozen pipe burst later that year. Then, just two weeks ago, they faced yet another terrible water disaster—this time, sewage backup.

Older Homes, Bigger Risks

Pebble Point is a neighborhood that was built in the late 1980s. This was during a time when home construction wasn’t as strictly regulated as it is today. Building codes were not as advanced or regulated and inspections were much more relaxed. Honestly, it seems like some of the homes were kind of thrown together and not built in the best way, so over time, things like plumbing, roofing as well as drainage systems have started to fail. Many of these homes were built with materials and methods that would definitely not meet today’s standards.

Unfortunately, this homeowner experienced firsthand what can happen when old pipes fail. The sewage line backed up a few feet outside of their house and it flooded into their home (including their kitchen–coming up the drain of the sink!) with Category 3 water—the most dangerous type of water damage. It contains bacteria, viruses, and other harmful contaminants that can make people very sick.

A Tough Situation Made Even Harder

To make matters worse, the homeowner was warned that if they filed another insurance claim before June, their policy would be canceled. They were stuck between a rock and a hard place—unable to pay out of pocket but also unable to risk losing their coverage.

The homeowner’s wife has health issues including asthma and they did not want to take any risks at trying to fix the issue themselves. That’s where First In Restoration came in. We knew this was an urgent and serious situation. Our team quickly removed the contaminated water, deep-cleaned and sanitized the area, and dried everything out to prevent mold and further damage. Most importantly, we worked with the homeowner to find a solution with our in-house financing that didn’t put their insurance policy at risk.

Protect Your Loganville Home From Emergency Sewage Cleanup Before Disaster Strikes

If you live in an older home in Loganville, Georgia especially in Pebble Point or the surrounding areas, it’s important to take preventative measures to protect your home from water damage. We recommend regular plumbing inspections, cleaning your drains as well as checking for small leaks which can help you avoid costly disasters like sewage backups or pipe bursts later down the road. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst to avoid emergency sewage cleanup in Loganville.

At First In Restoration, we specialize in emergency water damage cleanup, whether it’s from broken pipes, heavy rain, or sewage backups. We are the number one water damage restoration company in Georgia, and we are committed to helping homeowners in Loganville and beyond. Document Water Damage for a Successful Insurance Claim

Water damage can be stressful, but proper documentation is the key to ensuring your insurance claim is approved quickly and fairly. The better your records, the easier it will be to prove the extent of the damage and get the compensation you deserve. Here’s how to document water damage like a pro:

Take Clear Photos Immediately

As soon as you notice water damage start taking photos of:

  • The source of the water damage (such as a burst pipe, leaking appliance, roof leak, etc.)
  • Affected areas: walls, floors, ceilings and furniture
  • Structural damage or visible mold
  • Soggy belongings and valuables
  • The water level if flooding occurred (use a ruler or object for scale)

Pro Tip: Take before-and-after photos if possible. If you have past pictures of your home’s condition (like on Christmas morning or a party), this can serve as proof of the extent of the damage.

Record Videos for Extra Proof

Photos are essential, but if you grab video (just use your phone) this will provide even better context. Walk through your home, surveying the affected areas and capture video of:

  • The running water from the burst pipe or leak
  • Full scope of the damage, including any structural issues
  • The sound of dripping or rushing water (this is helpful for insurance adjusters)

Pro Tip: Try to narrate the video as you walk through the damage, explaining what happened and pointing out key details. Don’t be shy. This is your time to show all the damage which will help in your insurance claim.

3. Save All Your Receipts

Keep a detailed record of:

  • Emergency repairs (ie: water extraction, emergency plumbing)
  • Hotel stays if the home is unlivable
  • Damaged personal items (with receipts if available)

Pro Tip: If you don’t have receipts, take photos of the damaged items and try to find a similar product online that are comparable to what you lost to show its value. Keep a spreadsheet to submit with your photos to the insurance.

4. Write a Detailed Incident Report

While it’s still fresh on your memory, write down your statement of exactly what happened including:

  • Date and time of the incident
  • Cause of the water damage (if known)
  • What areas of your home and personal items were affected
  • Include any immediate actions you took (ie: shutting off water, calling First In Restoration, etc.)

Pro Tip: Keep a water damage journal and keep all communication with your insurance company, including claim numbers, adjuster name, details, and updates.

5. Call First In Restoration for Your Water Damage Insurance Claim

Insurance adjusters don’t work for you. They work for the insurance company. This means that oftentimes they will underestimate the water damage. Having First In Restoration inspect your water damage can strengthen your claim. We provide:

  • A professional damage assessment
  • Moisture readings (including for hidden water damage)
  • A detailed PDF report with photos and repair costs

Pro Tip: Most insurance policies cover mitigation efforts. Acting fast to remove water can prevent further damage and increase your chances of claim approval.

6. File Your Claim ASAP

Most insurance companies have strict deadlines for filing water damage claims. If you let water damage sit and don’t call a mitigation company right away then your insurance company may deny your claim. Don’t delay—submit your documentation, reports, and receipts as soon as possible. If you need help navigating the insurance claim process or dealing with water damage, First In Restoration is here to help! We’re Georgia’s #1 water damage restoration company, ready to help you recover quickly and get the payout you deserve.

Water Everywhere? Here’s How to Find Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve FAST!

Water is beautiful. It’s necessary. It’s great—until it’s flooding your home, ripping through your kitchen, soaking your new carpet or spraying like Niagara Falls from a busted pipe. Shutting off your main water shut-off valve fast during an emergency can save you from major damage as well as expensive repairs. Here’s how!

Locate Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve

Your home’s main water shut-off valve is usually in one of these places:

Inside: Look in your home’s basement, garage or near the water heater.

Outside: It may be near the street or even in a box underground (time to call someone)

Pro Tip: If you’re not sure where it is, find it before an emergency happens!

Turn Off the Water

Once you find the valve, turn it clockwise (remember: righty tighty, lefty loosey) to shut off the water. If it’s a lever-style valve, you will need to turn it so it’s perpendicular to the pipe.

If you can’t turn it by hand, use pliers or a wrench (Google is helpful if you don’t know what you’re looking for and need a visual). Stuck? Don’t trust YouTube! Call First In Restoration for emergency plumbing services!

Drain the Pipes

After shutting off the water, turn on a few faucets (inside and out) to drain the leftover water. This helps relieve pressure on the pipes and prevents more leaks.

Call First In Restoration

If you have a major (or minor) leak, and a big water damage mess on your hands don’t wait—call First In Restoration. We’re the #1 water damage restoration company in Georgia and serve Loganville, Johns Creek, Gwinnett, Walton, Barrow, Hall, Jackson and Clarke counties.
